Scenario: ESCAPE
![]() |
| Romanian Defending reserves arrive to cause havoc in the rear of the British Attackers |
This scenario inverts many of the normal flames of war Attacker Vs Defender tactics and I love it!
Callouts:
- Notice that the defenders Immediate Reserves come on behind the attacker and the defender gets the first turn. Thats a big headache for the attacker as they have to fit all the army under cover from the front and the back of the table and the defender gets a chance to range in and drop artillery on the first turn.
- The Attacker must push forward quickly while defending the rear of their tanks, thats not an easy thing to do.
Quick Thoughts:
- Defender has the advantage if you have ATG's and Infantry with tank reserves.
Some hints to winning the scenario:
- Defender
- A unit of anti tank guns in ambush can basically "hold" a table half. Normally an attacker could sit back and drop artillery on the ATG then move forward across the table. Thats much harder to do when you have units showing up in your rear attacking the same artillery thats trying to destroy the defenders ATG.
- Your Infantry can really stop up an attackers movement and restrict the avenues of attack. Given all your infantry start Gone to Ground and in Bullet Proof cover, you can stop tank / infantry assaults against your own infantry with supporting defense units. The attacker must move forward into your guns so make them pay for ever inch of forward movement ( while your reserves cause havoc in the rear ).
- Keep the high value tanks in defense and the cheaper armor in reserves. Your lower AT Sherman are great at shooting out the rear of that Panther.
- Use your armored reserves to destroy the attacker artillery ( if they are a threat to your ATG or Infantry units ). Once you destroy these units your own ATG and Infantry will be very tough to defeat.
- Your own Infantry can help to keep your backfield clear of enemy by creating your own "roadblock". It will take time to defeat your own dug in infantry and that means you can focus more on attacking the defenders in your front. Your own ATG can do the same ( German 88's are fantastic at keeping both directions of the map clear ).
- Move forward + forward + forward. Don't turn around if you can. Use your less than powerful units to keep the defender reserves from your key units moving forward.
- Use Smoke Screens, to the rear to mitigate the defender reserves. Stoping a unit of defender reserves M10's in your rear from firing at 36" range for a turn is well worth the smoke screen.
